2027 IRMAA Brackets Release Date: Official vs. Projected

How to tell whether a 2027 IRMAA number is projected, formula-complete, or officially published by CMS. And what each stage is safe to use for.

As of September 2, 2026, the official 2027 Medicare Part B premium and IRMAA income-threshold table has not been released. There is no guaranteed annual release date. Recent CMS announcements have landed anywhere from late September to mid-November.

But “not official yet” does not mean every 2027 number you see is equally speculative. For the 2027 IRMAA brackets release date, there are really three stages to understand: projected now, formula-complete after the August 2026 CPI data arrives, and CMS-official when the agency publishes the final Medicare table. That middle stage is the distinction most explanations skip.

Quick Answer

The safest answer is fall 2026, but not on a guaranteed date. CMS released the 2023 Medicare premium/IRMAA information on September 27, 2022; 2024 on October 12, 2023; 2025 on November 8, 2024; and 2026 on November 14, 2025. The August 2026 CPI data needed for the statutory inflation adjustment is scheduled for September 11, 2026. After that release, the ordinary indexed thresholds can be calculated from the law, but I would still label them formula-complete, not CMS-official, until CMS publishes the final 2027 table.

Use the Right IRMAA Page

This page owns when the 2027 numbers become usable and official. If you need the actual thresholds and surcharge amounts after release, use my IRMAA brackets guide. If your question is how the two-year lookback affects income planning, use my IRMAA premium-planning guide.

When Are the 2027 IRMAA Brackets Released?

CMS does not publish a standing rule that says next year’s IRMAA table comes out every November 1. The date moves.

The agency’s own recent release history gives us a better answer:

Premium yearCMS release dateStatus
2023September 27, 2022Official
2024October 12, 2023Official
2025November 8, 2024Official
2026November 14, 2025Official
2027Not released as of September 2, 2026Pending

So I would not tell you the 2027 brackets are “due” on one exact November date. The defensible planning answer is fall 2026. The finish line is the CMS announcement, not a date another website predicted months in advance.

You can verify those dates in the CMS releases for 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

What Is Official for 2027 IRMAA Right Now?

Some 2027 Medicare numbers are already official. The full 2027 Part B premium and IRMAA income-threshold table is not.

On July 28, 2026, CMS published Part C and Part D bid information, including a 2027 Part D base beneficiary premium of $41.33. That is an official 2027 number. It is not the same release as the final Part B premium and IRMAA threshold table.

Do Not Mix Up These Releases

“Some 2027 Medicare numbers are out” does not mean “the 2027 IRMAA brackets are official.” Medicare publishes different pieces of the next year’s program on different schedules.

You can see the already-final Part D information in the July 28, 2026 CMS Part C and Part D announcement. Keep the Part D base premium separate from the income-related Part D surcharge and from your plan’s actual premium; my Part D IRMAA guide owns that cost question.

Projected, Formula-Complete, and Official: The Three IRMAA Stages

Treating every pre-CMS number as either just a guess or already official is too crude. There is a useful middle stage.

StageWhat you knowHow I would use it
1. ProjectedOne or more inputs are still unknown, so the threshold is an estimate.Scenario planning, budgeting, and testing whether you are comfortably away from a likely threshold.
2. Formula-completeThe August CPI-U data needed by the statutory indexing formula has been published, allowing the ordinary indexed thresholds to be calculated under the law.Much tighter planning, while still labeling the result as calculated rather than CMS-official.
3. CMS-officialCMS has published the final Medicare premium and IRMAA table.Verification, budgeting, notices, and exact current-year threshold/surcharge references.

The reason stage two exists is statutory. Section 1839(i)(5) of the Social Security Act indexes the ordinary inflation-adjusted IRMAA thresholds using the average CPI-U for the 12-month period ending with August of the preceding year, with the applicable indexed amounts rounded as the statute specifies. For 2027 thresholds, that means the August 2026 CPI data matters.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI release calendar currently schedules the August 2026 CPI report for September 11, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Until that report arrives, projection models still have a missing inflation input. After it arrives, the threshold calculation becomes far less speculative—but CMS is still the authority that publishes the official Medicare table. “Formula-complete” is my planning shorthand here, not an official CMS label.

Michael’s Take

A number can be mathematically knowable before it is administratively official. I am comfortable using a formula-complete number for planning with the proper label. I am not comfortable telling you CMS has released the brackets when CMS has not.

What to Do Before the 2027 IRMAA Brackets Are Official

For 2027 IRMAA, the normal two-year lookback points to 2025 income. By September 2026, that tax year is already closed. The final 2027 CMS announcement will tell you the official threshold; it will not let you go back and undo a 2025 Roth conversion, capital gain, or other voluntary income event.

That is why I separate premium verification from income planning. The release calendar tells you when the government number becomes official. The tax calendar tells you when you still have a decision to make.

IRMAA planning timeline before the final Medicare bracket release
Use pre-release numbers to plan within their confidence level—not to pretend CMS has already published them.

Before the official release, I would use this four-part check:

Before-Release Check

  • Label the number. Is it projected, formula-complete, or CMS-official?
  • Know which tax year is already locked. For 2027 under the normal lookback, that is generally 2025.
  • Do not build a fragile plan around a one-dollar estimate. If the decision works only if a projected threshold lands exactly where expected, you need more margin.
  • Separate this year’s premium question from the next income decision you can still control. Those may be different calendar years.

What to Do After CMS Releases the 2027 IRMAA Table

Once CMS publishes the table, stop blending projections with official figures. Replace the estimate.

  1. Confirm you are looking at the 2027 CMS table, not a cached projection.
  2. Use the correct filing-status column.
  3. Match the threshold to the MAGI year Social Security is using. If you need the mechanics, use my how Medicare calculates IRMAA guide.
  4. Calculate the actual Part B and Part D surcharge if you need dollars. My IRMAA calculator is the better next step than recreating the full table here.

The point is simple: after CMS publishes the table, you no longer need to average forecasts, compare competing projections, or wonder which estimate is “closest.” You have the official reference.

What If Your IRMAA Notice Uses Income That No Longer Reflects Your Life?

That is no longer a release-date problem. If your income fell because of retirement, marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, work reduction, loss of pension income, or another qualifying life-changing event, Social Security may permit a new IRMAA determination using more recent information.

The Social Security Administration explains the qualifying life-changing-event process. My separate SSA-44 IRMAA appeal guide owns the form, documentation, and appeal steps.

The IRMAA Release Date Is a Verification Point, Not a Planning Strategy

If you came here for one answer, keep this one: the official 2027 Part B premium and IRMAA threshold table is not out as of September 2, 2026, and CMS has no guaranteed annual release date.

Before September 11, 2026, the 2027 indexed thresholds are still projections because the August CPI input is missing. After BLS publishes that August CPI data, the ordinary indexed thresholds can be calculated under the statute and rounded as the law specifies. When CMS later publishes the Medicare table, the numbers become administratively official.

Michael’s Rule

Use projections to explore. Use formula-complete numbers to tighten the plan. Use the CMS release to verify.
