INSTANT HELP

Ask the Michael Ryan Money Assistant.

Specific questions get better answers. Include the age, account type, rule, timing issue, or decision you are trying to understand. Leave out private account details.

Keep private information private.

Do not enter passwords, Social Security numbers, bank or brokerage account numbers, tax IDs, or private documents. The assistant is an educational tool and can make mistakes, so verify important financial, tax, legal, or insurance decisions with the appropriate qualified professional. THE BETTER-QUESTION RULE

Ask about the decision, not just the topic.

The useful question is usually not “What is a Roth IRA?” It is “What changes if I do this now?” Give the assistant the decision, timing, and constraint.

TOO BROAD “Tell me about Roth conversions.”

You will get a definition, but not much help deciding what matters for you.

BETTER “What could a Roth conversion affect besides my tax bracket?”

Now the answer can surface IRMAA, capital gains, credits, cash for taxes, and timing.

DECISION READY “I am 63. What should I check before converting this year?”

Age, Medicare timing, income, account mix, and the size of the conversion can now shape the explanation.

RETIREMENT“I am 62 with most of my savings in a 401(k). What should I think through before retiring?”
SOCIAL SECURITY“I am 64 and still working. How can earnings affect my Social Security benefit?”
ESTATE + FAMILY“My beneficiary form and my will say different things. Which one usually controls the account?”
CASH + BANKING“How much should I keep liquid if I am close to retirement and do not want too much sitting in cash?”
