2027 Tax Brackets & Financial Limits: What’s Official

2027 tax brackets are not official yet. As of September 26, 2026, the IRS has released 2027 HSA limits, while federal tax brackets, the standard deduction, 401(k) and IRA limits, the Social Security COLA, and full Medicare Part B and IRMAA costs are still pending.

The useful distinction right now is official vs. projected vs. not released. This tracker keeps those labels separate, so you can estimate a 2027 tax or savings decision without accidentally treating a projection like an IRS, SSA or CMS number.

2027 tax brackets: projected now, official IRS figures pending

The IRS has not published the official 2027 federal income tax brackets yet. Wolters Kluwer’s September 18 projection uses inflation data through August 2026. Because October 2025 CPI data is missing, the final IRS thresholds could differ. Treat the figures below as planning estimates, not filing numbers.

Which 2027 numbers are official already?

Three numbers are useful now. They answer different questions, so check the income year and whether the amount is a contribution limit, spending cap, or Medicare surcharge threshold.

RELEASED · IRS

2027 HSA contribution limits

$4,500 self / $9,000 family

2026: $4,400 self / $8,750 family.

What it changes: Set a 2027 HSA payroll election if you remain eligible. Medicare enrollment generally stops new HSA contributions, even if you keep money already in the account.

IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-24

RELEASED · MEDICARE HANDBOOK

2027 Part D covered-drug cap

$2,400

2026: $2,100. The cap is $300 higher; that does not mean everyone pays $300 more.

What it changes: Compare your prescriptions, plan formulary, pharmacies, premium and likely annual total. The cap applies to covered Part D drugs.

Medicare & You 2027

RELEASED · MEDICARE HANDBOOK

2027 Part D IRMAA starting income

Above $111,000 / $222,000

Individual / married joint; generally based on 2025 MAGI. Full 2027 surcharge amounts are pending.

What it changes: If your 2025 income crossed the line, watch for the full CMS premium table. The extra Part D amount is per beneficiary and sits on top of the plan premium.

Which 2027 numbers are still pending?

These rows become official only when the issuing agency publishes them. The expected windows are a planning watch, not a promised release date.

PENDING · EXPECTED OCTOBER

Social Security COLA and earnings test

Official 2027 figures pending

Why watch: A COLA changes gross benefits. The earnings test matters if you work and collect before your full retirement age; the net check can also reflect Medicare deductions.

Follow SSA’s COLA release

PENDING · FALL IRS RELEASE

Tax brackets, deductions and capital gains

Official 2027 thresholds pending

Why watch: Set a 2027 conversion or gain-harvesting range using taxable income, then check separate MAGI rules for the senior deduction and Medicare.

Follow IRS releases · See the 2026 baseline

PENDING · FALL IRS RELEASE

401(k), IRA, catch-up and QCD limits

Official 2027 limits pending

Why watch: Change next year’s payroll election, IRA contribution plan or charitable IRA transfer only after the IRS publishes the applicable limit.

Follow IRS retirement guidance · See the 2026 QCD rule

PENDING · LATER-FALL CMS RELEASE

Part B premium and the full IRMAA tiers

Official 2027 premium table pending

Why watch: The handbook’s first Part D income line is useful, but it is not the complete Part B and Part D surcharge schedule. Budget per person once CMS posts the full table.

Which income year affects which Medicare year?

IRMAA normally looks back two tax years. Keep the income year separate from the premium year when you use a calculator or decide how much to convert.

2024 income → 2026 premiumsThe published 2026 IRMAA table is available now.
2025 income → 2027 premiumsThe first Part D income line is known; full surcharge dollars are pending.
2026 income → 2028 premiumsNo official 2028 IRMAA tier table yet. Avoid treating 2026 thresholds as a future quote.

Use the 2026 reference for current-year income, contributions and Medicare costs. Save this tracker for the 2027 releases, and check any official figure against the date and source shown here. If income fell after a qualifying life-changing event, SSA explains when a new IRMAA determination may apply.
